Mwandi District is located in the southern part of the Western Province of Zambia. It is located between 24.1 degrees and 25.2 degrees east of Greenwich and between latitudes 16.6 degrees and 17.8 degrees south of the Equator. The District shares boundaries with three Districts; Sesheke on the west, Mulobezi District in the North East and Kazungula District in the East. It also shares international boundaries with Namibia in the South. Mwandi District is approximately 65Km from Sesheke, and 135 Km from Livingstone Town. Mwandi District covers a total surface area of 6118.46 Km2 while Mwandi Township covers an extent of 2000 hectares with possibilities of extension in the near future.
The population of Mwandi District is estimated at 39,315 people with 19,624 males and 19,691 females according to the 2022 Census of Population and Housing Preliminary Report.It has two types of settlement patterns linear in some parts of the district and other parts have sparsely settlement pattern. The settlements in the district predominantly follow water courses. High population density is found around Mwandi Lwazamba, Loanja and Mabumbu. Medium population densities are found around Chisu, Lutaba, Simungoma, Kalundu and Magumwi. Whereas low population densities are found around Adonsi, Sankolonga and Mushukula.
Mwandi district is in Agro – ecological region I which is characterized by high temperatures, high evaporative losses and a short growing season due to low and poorly distributed rainfall of less than 800mm.
The predominant soil types in the district are arenosols, which are infertile and have sandy textures with little or no profile development associated with the Kalahari sand deposits. Since the nutrient level is low, agricultural use of these soils requires careful management.
There are two types of land tenure, these are trust and customary. Most of the trust land is reserved forest area. The District is covered by customary land covering Senior Chief Inyambo Yeta’s area of jurisdiction. The main activities in the District are basically mixed farming which are cattle rearing, crop production, fishing, timber, and sand mining.
