In accordance with the Local Government Act No. 281 of the Laws of Zambia and the various statutes. Section 61 of the Local Government Act list functions of Local Authorities. The following are the overall functions of the Local Authority:

  • To establish and maintain offices and buildings to transact the business of the Council and for public meetings and assembles.
  • To prohibit and control the erection and display of advertisements and advertising devices in, or in view of, streets and other public places.
  • To establish and maintain business premises through inspection and enforcement and also the regulation of the intoxicating liquor for sale and for consumption on and off the premises.
  • To control the killing of animals whose meat is meant for human consumption, to use certification to govern the sale of such meat, and to get rid of animal carcasses that are diseased or meat that is unfit for human consumption.
  • To establish and maintain hygiene in abattoirs, cold storage facilities and also to monitor the processing of by-products from abattoirs.
  • Inspection of premises and monitoring of pollution levels in order to ensure adherence and compliance to the relevant environmental laws.
  • Development and promotion of sports and related recreation inorder to improve the well being of the community
